Last night, council also voted to investigate holding a car-free day in the city around the long weekend in October next year.

Council says the day will coincide with school holidays to encourage parents and children to visit the city.

What a load of rubbish! How stupid is it to hold a car free day on the weekend - when public transport is at it's weakest. I never catch public transport on the weekend - it's way too damn slow.

As for encouraging families in to the city.. I don't think so. Families generally have cars. A car load of people would be cheaper and far easier to manage than taking your kids on the train or bus, not to mention far less annoying to other people when your kid starts screaming.

I don't have a problem with car free days on weekdays - I'd never think about driving to work on a weekday, waaay too much hassle.
